Understand How to Read Bodies in Yoga/Asana

A Weekend of Anatomy

April 29 - May 1, 2022

Reading Bodies in Asana Weekend

Join Joan Hyman in this asana oriented clinic for teachers and practitioners who want to increase their knowledge of asana by understanding correct alignment and how to use props to support postures and prevent injury. This workshop is specifically designed for yogis looking to understand and refine postures and for yoga teachers looking to improve their knowledge on how to read bodies and make adjustments that meet student’s individual needs. We will learn how to increase longevity in your practice by studying the anatomy in poses and learn how to stack the bones so muscles can work in an optimal way. This workshop will help to improve your confidence as a teacher by refining your instruction, the use of props, and learning to adjust to your individual needs and others.

We will slowly climb up each platform of the body and refine each section to create stability and support in vulnerable places like the knees, lower back, and neck. Joan will open with a brief discussion of the anatomy of the bones and muscles that support each section before moving into a workshop style practice using wall space and props to help to align the bones and teach how to engage deeper muscles needed to support the joints. Joan will look at different bodies and point out areas that are dull (tamasic) or overworked (ragasic) and teach how to find balance (sattvic) in these areas. Gain an understanding on how to work with props and wall space to align from the inside out and light up the postures helping your practice to feel buoyant and leave your body feeling transformed.

Your weekend Plans

FRIDAY • APRIL 29, 2022

Working with the feet and lower legs to protect the knees.

10am -2:30pm PDT (W/ a 30 mIn Break)

The feet and lower legs are our base of support and help to protect the knees. There are small bones and muscles in these areas and sometimes they get overlooked and overloaded. Without a strong foundation, it is hard to find true alignment and support the bones above. We will learn how to work with the feet and lower legs to support the knees and find balance through the rest of our bodies.

Using the legs and hips to protect the lower back.

10am - 2:30pm PDT (W/ a 30 Min Break)

The thighs and pelvis help to protect the lower back. These bones are strong and designed for weight with strong muscle groups that help to support this fulcrum point of our body. Understanding how to move our thigh bones back and stack the pelvis is essential for low back health which helps to support our center were all of the rotation and balance revolve around. We will look at standing postures and understand how to support the curves of our spine before moving into simple backbends and hip openers to end.

SUNDAY • MAY 1, 2022

Protecting the neck by understanding the shoulder girdle.

10am - 2:30pm PDT (W/ a 30 Min Break)

The shoulder girdle protects the neck. In our modern day age, the shoulders can collapse from too much time on the device creating strain and muscle tightness in the neck region. We will look at the upper half of the body and dive into postures that are weight bearing on the arms and shoulders and learn how to use the shoulder girdle in an optimal way. Because there is so much weight bearing postures on our arms and shoulders, it is essential to understand how to employ the shoulder girdle in these poses.

"You will leave this weekend learning how to increase the longevity in your practice by studying the anatomy in certain poses and learn how to stack the bones so muscles can work in an optimal way."

Enjoy all the classes over the whole weekend. Even if you can't make it to class, the sessions will be recorded so you can experience them on your own time. This will be fifteen hours for the students in The School of Yoga. Message Joan for promo code and to credit hours.
